Whilst we have all heard of spring cleaning, many of us forget the importance of winter maintenance. The long, dark nights, cold and wet weather mean more time spent indoors and a host of challenges for the home to endure. So, with that in mind, we have created this checklist of things to do for your home this winter.
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are essential for safety throughout the year, but none more so than the winter. This is because heaters, which are one of the biggest causes of fire, see their usage rise exponentially during the winter period. So, make sure to test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace their batteries if necessary.
Put away patio furniture and appliances
From BBQs and lawnmowers to tables and chairs, it is time to take any patio furniture that is still outside and put it in your shed, garage, or another suitable indoor storage space. The same goes for any planters you would like to save.
Upgrade those old windows
The main reason why you want to think about upgrading old windows in winter is that they are one of the main reasons your home will feel the cold. This is especially true if you have single glazing fitted. Upgrading to new, double glazed windows, however, means more warmth is kept in the home and more noise is kept out. Get your gutters cleared
Gutter blockages can cause water to build up in your gutter, which can freeze once the temperature drops. This leads to extra weight in your gutters, which can cause them to sag and even break away. However, you can clear your gutters yourself or pay someone to do it for you. On inspection of your gutters, if you find they need replacing, we can take care of this for you.
Inspect your roof for leaks
Following on from the last point, if you are already checking your gutters, this is a good time to inspect your roof too. If there are any leaks present, the cold and wet weather will soon find its way into your home through them. So, it’s important these are rectified sooner rather than later.
Take care of your water tank
The colder temperatures in the winter mean your boiler must work harder to heat your hot water tank again and again. However, insulating your water heater can reduce the strain on your boiler, saving energy.
Invest in some rugs and/or carpet
Rugs are one of the most cost-effective solutions for trapping more heat in the home this winter. The right rug can also really bring a room together.
Those with laminate, tiles, and vinyl types of flooring will know how cold these surfaces can be underfoot. So, if sacrificing less upkeep for additional warmth sounds good to you, you should consider having your home carpeted too.
Keep your home ventilated
Although it might be tempting to keep your windows shut to keep out the cold, failing to adequately ventilate your home can lead to damp and condensation. Over time, this can cause harmful mould to grow. So, keep your windows open for at least 20 minutes a day. You should also use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms because lots of moisture is generated in these rooms.
Take care of any draughty doors
The last thing you want during wintertime is cold draughts seeping into your home and cold air getting out. So, whatever type of door you have fitted, if it’s draughty, now is the time you had it fixed.

Check your boiler is working properly
If you’re yet to use your boiler this year, its imperative you check it works before the temperature reaches freezing levels. Before you turn the heating on, bleed the radiators first, so you can test the system more effectively.
Do you have loft insulation fitted?
If the answer to this question is no, this could be the best investment you make this wintertime. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that 25% of heat is lost through the roof in a home without insulation. With loft insulation being effective for at least 50 years, it will easily pay for itself in the long run as it reduces your heating bill year after year.
Replace your conservatory roof
Old conservatory roofs, especially polycarbonate ones, are renowned for their poor heat retention. So, if your conservatory has seen better days, consider upgrading the roof to one of our tiled roof replacements. They can turn a previously cold conservatory into a cosy and quiet space, suitable for use in whatever way you please. With Christmas just around the corner, that extra space might be especially useful.
