VELUX Windows are guaranteed for 10 years by VELUX whilst any electrical products, blinds and shutters are guaranteed for 3 years. However, many of the VELUX window installations that are replaced are over 30 years old, which indicates they can last for this long and maybe for even longer.
The best way to increase the length of time that VELUX windows will last is to provide them with the proper care and you can do this by using our top tips below:
VELUX windows come with an air filter which can only be accessed when they are open. By keeping the air filter free from grime and dust, air can circulate more freely. This is important for preventing condensation build-up.
A constant build-up of condensation does not just encourage damp and mould growth, both of which can be harmful to humans, but it can damage the paintwork and, eventually, the window itself. Therefore, it’s important to keep roof windows open from time to time to ensure adequate ventilation.
In order to allow skylights to open and close without any difficulty, you should aim to lubricate hinges and closing mechanisms annually.
The flashing is fitted around the perimeter of the roof glazed window on the outside, ensuring that the VELUX window is totally weathertight. By keeping it clear of any leaves or debris, rainwater should also be able to flow freely away from the VELUX installation and out of harm’s way.
The frames and glass of VELUX windows can be easily cleaned using warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. However, you might find a standard glass cleaner is more effective for cleaning the glass.
For polyurethane windows, you only need to worry about cleaning the frames from time to time. However, if your home has Painted White or Pine VELUX windows, you should also aim to prime and lacquer their framing from time to time to protect the VELUX window frame paint.
The technique for treating wooden VELUX windows will depend on whether their frames are painted white or pine.
For skylights with pre-finished (painted white) frames, the frames should be cleaned and then the factory finish should be removed. Next, the wood should be primed, the primer left to dry and then a coat of water-based acrylic varnish/paint should be applied.
For unfinished (pine) frames, follow the same method as you would for pre-finished frames, although you needn’t worry about removing the factory finish beforehand. With pine frames, you should also aim to retreat them within 6 months of them being installed whilst pre-finished frames can be checked annually to see if the finish has suffered any damage.
When retreating the frames, always make sure to keep all varnish and paint of any gaskets and the glass too.
If you're looking to revamp the appearance of your existing VELUX windows, you may be wondering if it is possible to paint them. Whilst you can paint old VELUX windows, we recommend getting an expert to do the job, or getting new VELUX windows installed. This is because VELUX windows are coated in a sophisticated and high-technology coating which when painted over, can cause warping, splitting and fading quickly as shop-bought paint isn't as tough as the type used in their fabrication. It can also be a messy job, and more times than most, a lick of paint will end up becoming more hassle than it is worth!
If you think that your glazed VELUX windows need repainting because they aren't looking like they were when they were installed, it's a sign that they're probably tired and aren't performing like new. Your home will be experiencing reduced levels of insulation, durability and the draughts will most likely be let in. Get in touch with your local VELUX window experts who can take a look and advise on the best solution for your VELUX windows, and let you know if it's time for a replacement.
A VELUX window installation is a simple home improvement project and will usually take between one or two days. However, this is dependent on each project as some are more challenging than others. Our expert installers can advise on how long it will take to fit new VELUX windows to your home.
Eventually, the time will come when you need to replace your old double glazed VELUX windows. However, when doing so, you need to know how to work out what size replacement you’ll need. Fortunately, we’ve created an informative guide for sizing up VELUX windows which you can use to do just that.
Once you’ve found the right size for your home, feel free to get in touch with us here at Sheerwater Glass and we can head out ASAP to fit it to your home.
