If you discover water or moisture inside your window, it is generally due to condensation. Condensation occurs when a certain object is cooler than the air around it. Think about having a cold drink during hot weather, where condensation builds on the outside of your glass. While condensation is a natural occurrence, finding moisture on the inside of a window is a major red flag.
Most windows today are double and triple glazed, meaning they have 2 and 3 panes of glass respectively, with insulating gas between each pane. However, if water or moisture is found between panes, this can indicate that the airtight seal that holds the insulating gas inside has been breached. This leads to moisture building within the window, causing damage and energy waste.
Failing to deal with this type of problem can not only cost you a lot of money on your energy bills, but it can lead to significant damage to your home.
5 solutions for reducing condensation on your windows
To combat condensation on your windows, you might try to reduce the amount of moisture in the air within your home. You can do this by:
- Placing a dehumidifier near your affected window as this will remove a certain amount of moisture in the area.
- Using extractor fans in spaces where there is a lot of moisture can limit the damage caused too. Bathrooms and kitchens are key areas for this.
- Avoid air-drying your clothes indoors to reduce additional moisture in your home. You might also stop using the tumble dryer too.
- Ensuring to keep your windows for at least 20 minutes a day. You might even have trickle vents fitted into your window frames.
- Moving any plants away from your windows because plants release moisture into the air.
However, once moisture has gotten between the panes of glass, the seal on the glass unit has failed. To rectify this, you will need to resort to other means.
Replacement glazed units
